The Cincinnati Bengals cleared rookie quarterback AJ McCarron to begin practicing with the team Tuesday. The move opens a 21-day window in which McCarron, the team’s fifth round pick out of Alabama who has been on the Non-Football Injury list with a shoulder injury since training camp, can practice without counting against the 53-man roster limit.

At the end of the 21 days, the Bengals will either have to activate McCarron or place him on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the remainder of the year.

Also Tuesday the team signed linebacker Terrell Manning to the practice squad. The 6-foot-2, 237-pound Manning is a second-year player from North Carolina State with nine games of NFL experience. He was with the New York Giants in the 2014 preseason before spending brief stints on the Miami and Chicago practice squads. The Bears activated him Sept. 22, and Manning appeared in three games before being waived. He was re-signed to the Chicago practice squad Oct. 14 and released Nov. 11.

A fifth-round draft pick of Green Bay in 2013, Manning played five games with the Packers and one game with the Chargers his rookie season.

The Bengals waived linebacker Justin Jackson from the practice squad to make room for Manning.
